Korea’s Newest Beauty Trend: Wire Nails

I found these short articles on Koreaboo, AsiaOne and Cosmopolitan Germany on Korea’s newest nail trend and it kept me wondering. So it seems like “wire nails” or “metal nails” are becoming more and more a thing in Korean manicure studios. Inspiring nail artist Park Eunkyung is referred to as the source of new chic as she has kicked off other nail art trends before. She uses malleable wire in gold, silver, pink or black to form them onto the nail. Though the designs look pretty and dainty, I can’t help but doubt the practicability of some (see picture at the end of this post). Or maybe it’s just me who works on a daily basis or does unusual house chores like washing the dishes, cooking or laundry. And do wire nails go well with magnetic material? Just being curious! Well, you know, sometimes beauty overweighs practicability.

Playlist: Airy Korean Spring Songs

It’s freaking SNOWING outside!! Like are you kidding be, spring? I’m so ready for warmth and loose clothes and this is what you offer? To get over this nastiness I made a spring playlist on my YT channel to share with you guys which surely has a Korean song listed for everyone who is looking for the cherry-blossom season. No matter if you prefer romantic tunes, classic guitar strings, catchy melodies or longing lyrics, or you’re still somewhat in an after-winter mood or polishing your bike for a picnic in blooming meadows or enjoying those butterflies in your tummy – I’d recommend to give it a go. And even if you want to skip spring and head to summer, you’ll find a track. View the complete playlist order here: Continue reading

Remembering the Sewol Ferry Tragedy

There is a lot to say, but too little words for the tragedy of the Sewol Ferry back in 2014. If you remember on today’s anniversary the Korean ferry named Sewol capsized on its way to Jeju Island / South Korea. I was in Korea at that time hearing the horrible news from my relatives at home first, and then watching local TV and news feed about the ferry – carrying mostly highschool students from Danwon High – sinking rapidly. Even though the Korean coast guards and fishing boats came to the rescue the 476 passengers and crew, only 172 survived. Most tragic fact: the high school students were told to stay put and wait for rescue on board and in their compartments while the ferry was flooded with water. Worse, the captain and most of the crew members abandoned the sinking ship while leaving the passengers behind – high school students (!!) – being the first to be rescued. The captain even disguised himself as a civilian to get off the ferry quickly. The first call for help wasn’t made by the crew either, but by a student (RIP Choi Dukha) aboard Sewol who sadly didn’t survive the disaster.

Lotte World Tower Scrapes The Sky

It’s finally done – Lotte World Tower in Jamsil (southeast of Seoul) shines bright as Seoul’s newly opened land mark! Back in 2014 when I visited Korea, the skeleton of Lotte World Tower was already built – only some stories missing – and last year, it almost seemed Lotte World Tower only missed out details. On Monday (April, 3) Lotte World Tower was presented as the world’s 5th highest building and Korea’s highest skyscraper (leaving Incheon’s Northeast Asia Trade Tower and Buran’s residential tower Haeundae Doosan Zenith Tower A now behind) to the public with a bombastic firework. And boy, was that a fire work! Articles say about 30,000 fireworks were lit for the opening ceremony and pyrotechnics worked for days to compose this fantastic sight.

Lotte World Tower is 555 meters high, counts 123 stories and took six years for construction. If you’re in Seoul and Continue reading

Update: Reaction Videos Now With Subs!

A short update on my reaction videos: I finally found the time to add German and English subs on both videos. Yay!! πŸ™‚ So I hope it’s more enjoyable (and comprehensible) now. I’m still sorry the music was so loud on the first one (I love listening to music on high volume) and so it was a struggle to understand us. Now, just switch on the subtitles if you fancy knowing what we’re babbling about. More videos are in the making soon, but we both work full-time, so finding time off is a struggle now and then. And no, new videos are not only going to be on BTS.

Happy Birthday to BTS’ Suga

I never had a soft spot for Kpop idol rappers (a few big ones have my respect though), till this grumpy marshmallow crossed my heart. His swag, his unconventionality, his talent, his effortless manliness, his dark nagging voice and his determination just blew me away. His lyrics are meaningful and deep, his beats are sick, his tongue technology out of this world and his mind wonders to all the right places. Sometimes I feel so sorry for him having to take the path as an idol to reach his dreams, for having to act cute or behaving according to social expectations. But then, pioneers always had to struggle to break conventions and open up new paths; and I know he can do so! Yoongi [stage name: Suga], calling you an “idol” is an insult, because you’re so much more, a true artist and genius. Happy Birthday!

My Reaction Video on BTS “Not Today”

[Note: the video is in German, I still didn’t manage to add subtitles, sorry!]

I’m kind of getting used to this πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ What to do next Sunday?
FYI, BTS broke their own record of the week before and reached 10M views in 22 hours with #NotToday, thus appearing in YouTube’s Top 42 trending list. They also set another new record with Spring Day and got their third MV hit 100M views with Blood, Sweat & Tears. Congrats to the boys and their fans.
