My Reaction Video on BTS “Not Today”

[Note: the video is in German, I still didn’t manage to add subtitles, sorry!]

I’m kind of getting used to this πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ What to do next Sunday?
FYI, BTS broke their own record of the week before and reached 10M views in 22 hours with #NotToday, thus appearing in YouTube’s Top 42 trending list. They also set another new record with Spring Day and got their third MV hit 100M views with Blood, Sweat & Tears. Congrats to the boys and their fans.

My First K-pop Reaction Video

[Note: the video is in German, but I’m kind of used to write everything in English… . Don’t ask why, I just feel more comfortable. I’ll see if I’ll add subtitles :)]

I’m sorry for being such a K-pop and BTS spammer at the moment. It’s just, as an old-school k-popper I never had the chance to actually hype through a comeback or watch videos in real time!! I sound so old and like a digital Neanderthal right now, but Super Junior, MBLAQ, Shinhwa or SHINee never had the possibilities or chances of SNS and live stream as it becomes more and more normal or standard at the moment. Throughout the live V Naver broadcast of BTS’ Spring Day comeback it was like a new world opened up, haha πŸ˜€ (felt like Columbus). I’m also used to watch subtitled videos months or years after broadcast and only since a few months Germans have free access to most YouTube videos. Most were blocked (including almost all original K-pop videos) due to licence and copyright issues. I solemnly swear to take up more general Korea content soon.

P.S. Although I was familiar with BTS since their debut, I only worked up the energy to get into them because of my friend who you can see in the video. Thanks for being stubborn! I just had other priorities at that time (like writing a master thesis on K-pop πŸ˜‰ ).

Day 15, Memory by Mamamoo

Hier gehts zum deutschen Text

Sexy, yet classy – that’s the best way to describe the atmosphere of Memory (also titled as Draw & Draw & Draw) of girl band Mamamoo. Their same named album Memory has just been released a month ago and Memory is the first song on the album, however, not the title track. Mamamoo is known to interested K-pop fans for having strong sultry vocals and a less mainstream concepts. In Memory the heavy Continue reading

Day 13, Surprise Party by AlphaBat

Hier gehts zum deutschen Text

After some solo artists in the Christmas Calendar, let’s move back to a less known idol group: debuted in 2013 boy band AlphaBat didn’t miss out on releasing their upbeat Christmas single Surprise Party. They changed their hip-hop tune from their debut song to a playful pop song with a happy guitar melody. We can watch AlphaBat who are dressed in holiday colors red and white on their Christmas photo shoot which is the main content of the music video. New band – same, lame old holiday concept; and as I have written before Continue reading

Day 12, Snow Again by Jung Dong Ha

Hier gehts zum deutschen Text

Strong Korean vocals don’t always have to rise to popularity because of K-pop. Jung Dong Ha was the former vocalist of the rock band Boohwal back in 2005 when he debuted. The rock band had many changing vocalist since their beginnings in 1986, but Jung Dong Ha stayed with them the longest until they separated in 2014. Jung Dong Ha‘s voice is not only suitable for rock tunes, but also for fierce ballads. As a soloist he has released many songs, most of them Continue reading

Day 11, Baby It’s Cold Outside by Sung Si Kyung & Ailee

Hier gehts zum deutschen Text

Strictly speaking today’s song is only about 30% Korean and debatable if to be listed in this Calendar. It’s famous Korean ballad singer Sung Si Kyung and Korean-American soloist Ailee meshing up their wonderful voices. However, neither their song nor their lyrics are in Korean, but in English as they perform the well-known Christmas carol Baby It’s Cold Outside. The song was originally written by Frank Loesser in 1944 and recorded for the movie Neptune’s Daughter.Β Baby It’s Cold Outside is designed as a call-and-response duet in which Continue reading

Day 9, Heat It Up by Brand New Music Artists

Hier gehts zum deutschen Text

K-pop has built a public platform for a music style which was more of an underground movement in Korea: Korean hip-hop. Being part of many pop songs, hip-hop and rap become more and more noted and found its way into mainstream music. Meanwhile rappers are able to act and release their own tracks without being part of an idol group, even though it is still less common. This year’s Christmas Calendar definitely pushes some small-scale companies and artists to the lime light to show a broader variety of recent Korean music. In last year’s Christmas Calendar we already met rapper Kanto on Day 19 who slayed a brilliant Christmas song. Now we’ll check out Kanto‘s label Brand New Music which is Continue reading

Day 7, As You Told Me by Kim Na Young

Hier gehts zum deutschen Text

Let’s get some rest from the hustle and bussle outside and lean back for a moment. Close your eyes and calm yourself down with the quiet melody of As You Told Me. Ballad singer Kim Na Young‘s powerful and warm vocals will touch your heart and is a good example for the other strong point of Korean music: K-ballads. The sentimental and soft tunes are found in mainstream K-pop too, but are mainly popular due to K-dramas (TV soap operas) which are of incredibly en vogue in Korean TV. After starting her music career as a street busker in the famous arts district Hongdae in Seoul, Kim Na Young managed to get her foot into the K-pop industry. Her mature voice fitted perfectly for K-dramas’ OST Continue reading

Day 6, After Winter by Koyote (feat. Kal Sowon)

Hier gehts zum deutschen Text

December, 6 is Saint Nicolas Day in Germany and special for children as they get sweets and chocolate if they’ve been good throughout the year. So in a way Germans have two types of Santa. I thought After Winter by the trio Koyote would fit this day perfectly as it also features a child’s voice. Child actress Kal Sowon sings the intro and outro of After Winter with her innocent, but slightly off-key vocals. However, the effect does not miss its point, her appearance puts a grin on your face seeing her adorable tooth gap and joyful nature. Continue reading

In-house artist collaborations! No year passes by without a bunch of artists of one K-pop company getting together in a studio and producing a holiday track for sure. Starship Planet have a christmasy song out every year and they never disappoint. They also mix their line-up in recent years and show more variety by having different vocals perform together and therefore show more of its company’s potential.
