Day 8: “A Typical Idol’s Christmas” by BTS

Zum deutschen Text

Christmas is that time of the year to be with your family, friends or lover, and enjoy staying at home peacefully – well, that’s the case for most of us. However, it isn’t for idols and other celebrities, who have crammed schedules which don’t allow them to be anywhere than at work. In their typical manner, BTS has critically picked up exactly this circumstance in their 2013 released holiday song A Typical Idol’s Christmas. Even though the melody is rather bland, (as so often) the rap lines stand out and carry the song’s main message. Continue reading

Day 3: “Like Santa (산타처럼)” by Kim Jin Pyo (feat. Namjoo)

Zum deutschen Text

Today’s song is killing me. It is so lovely and sad, and I feel like a lot is said through the lyrics, but I have a tough time finding infos or a translation on it, so I roughly translated some parts to grasp the message of the song. Like Santa is a track by long-time rapper Kim Jin Pyo (JP) and features singer Namjoo from the girl band Apink (I don’t know any other “Namjoo” tbh), which was a good choice as their voices are so harmonious: Kim Jin Pyo‘s hard and masculine rap makes such a smooth contrast to Namjoo’s lovely sung lines. Playlist: Spooky Halloween Kpop Songs

If you thought Kpop is all jolly tunes, lovey-dovey music videos and fluffy pastel idols the Halloween season will prove you very wrong! There is quite an amount of dark tracks, mysterious visuals and gory settings out there. Hidden in the deep shadows of Kpop, you’ll find eerie characters like witches, zombies, werewolves, voodoo masters, vampires or ghosts – just to name a few. The audio-visual degree of spookiness is as diverse: playful, harsh, deep to disturbing.

I tried to find a nic— I mean, horrifying mixture for this Halloween playlist to fit anyone’s taste. Some tracks are listed because their title obviously hints the Halloween theme (s.a. BIGBANG’s “Monster”, Grace’s “Trick or Treat” or BtoB’s “Thriller”). Some music videos only have minor fitting elements (s.a. Twice’s “Like OOH-AHH”, 4Minute’s “What’s Your Name?” or ZE:A’s “The Ghost of Wind”), others are a bloody mess (s.a. Cross Gene’s “Black or White”, Vixx‘s “Voodoo Doll”, SHINee’s “Married to the Music”). Some need no gore to give you the creeps (s.a. Sunny Hill’s “Pray”, Xia’s “Flower”, Cho Hyung Woo’s “Someone I Know”), and then there are those which fit the overall mysterious mood (s.a. NCT U’s “The 7th Sense”, BTS’ “Blood Sweat & Tears” or Gain’s “Paradise Lost”). Enjoy!

Day 22, Christmas Day by BTS’ Jimin & Jungkook

Zum deutschen Text

Sometimes a cover isn’t a bad thing – especially not if BTS set their hands on it. With Christmas being only three days ahead Christmas Day spreads a smile on your face – even if sadly not the whole line-up of BTS performs this song. It’s only BTS‘ maknae-line Jimin and Jungkook who cheer us up in the hustle and bustle before the holidays, but as the two of them have so soothing voices, one can almost neglect Continue reading

Day 8, Be My Merry Christmas by Taecyeon

Zum deutschen Text

If you have read the post Why Koreans Take WHAM Seriously, you know one thing for sure: Christmas is Korea’s second Valentines Day. Asking someone out on Christmas Day is a clear confession to wanting to date someone. 2PM boy band member Ok Taecyeon took a humorous take on this trend in his holiday song Be My Merry Christmas. The narrator sees couples wandering around before Christmas and suddenly picks up his courage to ask his crush out on Christmas. He contacts her via messenger, but Continue reading

Day 4, Thank U For by XIA

Hier gehts zum deutschen Text

Let’s call this day a tribute day to XIA (also known as Junsu) as he will be serving in the army next year and he’ll be off the K-pop scene for some time. Thank U For is a digital single released on Christmas Eve 2012 as a Christmas present for fans. The lyrics were written by XIA‘s twin brother Juno – so you could call it a family collaboration. XIA has also been on the K-pop scene for a long time as he debuted 2003 as part of the boy band TVXQ (or DBSK). The band was maybe the most highly successful idol group of their time, before they sadly split apart in 2009 – leaving their fans devastated. Three group members (XIA being one of them) decided to refute their exclusive contract as they felt it was unfair. They won and formed a band on their own called JYJ (first letters of their Korean first names); TVXQ, however, continued as a duo. Continue reading

Day 2, Snowy Day by NS Yoon-G (feat. DinDin)

Hier gehts zum deutschen Text

Dubidubidub, bet this tune will be stuck in your head after listening to Snowy Day? After having a melancholic song yesterday, we’ll have some more joyful moments today. Korean-American singer NS Yoon-G and rapper DinDin show us another possibility on how to melt a soft female voice and hiphop rhythms together. Although released in 2014 the song is often described as “picking up the 80s vibe”. I’m not sure, I’d agree, but then I’m not really familiar with the Korean 80s tune. Snowy Day is certainly not a song to curl up at the fireplace, but wants you to get into the holiday mood. Continue reading
